special - interview with jens thele
This is my email interview with Jens Thele. Thanks to Sashimi for help in creating some
of the questions. If you wanna know who is Jens Thele - click here.
Hello Jens. First of all, thank you for this interview. It won't be a lie if I tell that fans don't know a lot about you. Could you introduce yourself, please?
- Born on 20th of December 1967 in Hamburg. Worked as a DJ in Hamburg and in a vinyl DJ recordstore, so I came to the music business. Then I worked at 'edel' in the distribution dept., where I met H.P. The Scooter's story began. But I don`t went up to the stage as you know. I founded Clubtools at 'edel', moved to the marketing/A&R side. I signed acts like Brooklyn Bounce, Celvin Rotane, No Respect Label. Then I moved to Urban Records, where I worked as senior A&R for 3 years. I signed acts like Robert Miles, Nalin & Kane, DJ Sammy (Loona), Nana, Wamdue Project, Venga Boys, Talla and so on and so on. The I founded Kontor Records (H.P and Rick are co-owners). Here I signed ATB, Blank & Jones, Sunbeam, Sequental One. As well Kontor is a club in Hamburg, which I co-own as well. We are releasing four times a year very successful compilation called 'Kontor Top Of The Clubs'.
Okay. You didn't appear on stage, but you work with guys in studio. What's your part in creating new tracks?
- It depends. Sometimes it`s idea, sometimes it`s in the last part of the production, for the arrangement of the song. Or sometimes groove or sound ideas. So as you can see it depends really. But I am not the whole time in the studio. So in a way I do as well A&R for the band, as well I do 'additional production'.
Let's talk about the new album. Its title, 'Back To The Heavyweight Jam', is suggesting back to the old Scooter's style - I mean first two albums. Is that true?
- Yes. More powerfull and fresh, less cheesy, more trancy! No ballad on it...
So how can you comment Carsten's words: 'We move forward, why do old stuff?' This is his answer for a question of a fan from our Scooter newsgroup, if you would create tracks in good, old rave style. And by the way big thanks for great, fresh remix of 'Waiting For Spring' performed during No Time To Chill Tour...
- As you might know Carsten is normally the tour-manager, and additional he is taking care of daily business, helping me, and he is answering our mails. So his words don`t have any 'heavy potential' on our music side. He is giving his best to please the fans and answering fast! So his commments are more missunderstood, and not worth to write about as I did the last sentences...
Sure. Did you ever think about releasing a collection of Scooter's singles/albums again? As you know, it's almost impossible to find some of them now. Before you answer for this question, please take a look at this address. It's a poll from my site. Results are very interesting...
- I think not soon another 'Best Of...', then maybe a live album, earlier than another 'Best Of...', but not planned yet! Reg. availability of backprogram, I will send you the list soon with all records which are 100% on stock. So it`s up to the recordshop to order. I will send it soon!
If we are talking about the releases, then could you tell me why do you produce tracks, like the new remix of 'Waiting For Spring', only in live versions? It would be great if we could listen to them at home, instead of only one time during the show. Don't you think so? You can put it, for example, on the single - as a bonustrack. What's the obstacle?
- No obstacle, but it is almost live , some pre-production plus additional keyboards, etc... So it is something special to go to Scooter concerts, hearing something special and not like an normal dance-act, performing their hits almost playback and like on the CDs!
Anyway, now you know that we hope to see this track on CD someday... :-)
Now we will go back to the time when Ferris left the group. Releases of 'No Fate' and, then, 'Rough & Tough & Dangerous' were signals that some important event is getting closer. Fans even thought about the end of Scooter. What did you think about Scooter's future then? What changes did you expect when Axel joined the group?
- As you might know, Axel worked for over one year in our studio, as an assistant, so everything was slowly. On the other hand Ferris builded up his own studio in his hometown Hannover, he wanted to pre-produce tracks for Scooter in Hannover, come up with basics and finishing here, but this never worked. So in away way it was naturally that Axel came in and Ferris stepped out. Axel was 120% motivated and behind everything, without beeing the biggest Scooter fan, and that was good, because he didn't say yes to everything. He was/is totally involved in the DJ things and so we had a bllodtransfusion with new motivation and spirit and I think, this can everybody here on.
And what's your opinion about destroying musical instruments? During No Time To Chill Tour H.P destroyed many guitars. Do you think that Scooter really needs something more than music to make people crazy? I know that sometimes live shows are very hot, but does it happen so often?
- It`s just party and positive energy! No vandalism! If the crowd is getting crazy then guys are getting crazy too!
What's your opinion about Scooter's Fan Club 'Ravenation'? Do you know that at the momment we have about 400 members?
- I didn`t know. Tell me about, what are you doing?
So, let's continue this topic... Why official fanclub from Hamburg doesn't reply for the letters? I know lots of people who wrote there and didn't get any answer. Could you explain that, please?
- Just reply if stamps are in. This FanClub is more or less just for autographs!
And what about the Scooter's logo on the covers of singles/albums? Is it missing only temporarily, like for example on 'No Fate', or won't it appear anymore?
- We will see! For this album new logo!
Will this album be as successful as the previous one? What do you think?
- Yes, I am sure! The presales in Germany are great. Single is really sucessful, so let`s cross the fingers...
Which tracks from the new album, of course except 'Faster Harder Scooter' might me single releases?
- We know in 2 weeks time!
Can we expect more promotions like the last live chat?
-
30.9.AOL Chat

10.10.-12.10 Video shooting for the next single

25./26./10. Promotion in Finland

And so on, and so on...
Are you going to prepare something special for the tour again?
- Sure!!! And much more live play, less pre-recording stuff!
Live album / video too?
- No video. We will make Millenium Edition of 'Back To The Heavyweight Jam' album, incl. live tracks from last tour.
And the final question - how do you see Scooter's future? How long can guys continue with creating new tunes? Until they will be out of new ideas or earlier, if they will be simply bored because of being a musicans?
- We will continue successfull how long we want! That`s my truly meaning! And this will be for a long time. And the beat goes on...
